A 4.0 robotics obsessive who turned competition skills toward assistive devices — an ED1 offer from Yale Engineering.
Student Background
A US high-school student with a 4.0 GPA and multiple AP 5s, obsessed with robotics — but his activities were competition-heavy (FRC) with little connection to social value.
The Challenge
Engineering is one of the most crowded fields. How do you break out of “pure tech” and show Yale the social responsibility it looks for?
Mentor Strategy
Upgrading the project
we guided him to design assistive devices for people with disabilities — a simple rehabilitation arm — and to test and iterate with a local rehab center, documenting the whole need-to-solution loop. The thread became “engineering that serves people.”
Essays and narrative
his essays contrasted competition trophies with trial feedback from users, arguing for the warmth of engineering. We matched his story to Yale’s work in social-innovation engineering. He was admitted ED1 to Yale’s engineering program.
The Result
Admitted ED1 to Yale University (Engineering)

Student Voice
“Thank you to the whole team! I used to live inside robotics competitions. You helped me aim the technology at something real — my mechanical skills went into assistive devices for people who need them. I finally understand what “engineering with a heart” means.”
